QUESTIONS AS FLAMBOYANT LAWYER KEN ECHESA QUITS. - He cites several reasons as he exits as Gov Barasa's Chief of Staff.
After extensive consultations and a profound forty-day experience, I have decided to resign from my position as Chief of Staff for Kakamega County. I tendered my resignation to the Governor this morning, wishing him all the best in his future endeavors. In my correspondence, I highlighted the dire state of our medical facilities, emphasizing that to believe our health sector is functioning effectively is to embrace a falsehood. It is my conviction that the Chief Officer of Health is misrepresenting the realities of a system that is, in fact, failing.
Furthermore, I urged the Governor to initiate urgent reforms within the Finance Department, ensuring that contractors who have fulfilled their obligations are compensated in a timely manner. It is vital that pending payments for staff, as well as dues for retired ECDE teachers, are settled promptly. Additionally, I called for the immediate remittance of SACCO and tax deductions, as mandated by law. I believe it is imperative for Chief Officer Dr. June Mwajuma to be held accountable; failure to do so risks plunging our systems into further disarray.
As an advocate, I feel a moral obligation to our society and refuse to partake in the political hero-worship that has permeated our governance. My initial belief in my ability to contribute positively to His Excellency's administration has been overshadowed by inefficiencies that hinder constructive dialogue. Therefore, I have chosen to forfeit my December 2024 salary in lieu of notice and redirect my January pay towards the purchase of BCG vaccines, which remain critically unavailable at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital. I extend my gratitude to those who supported me during my tenure, and I look forward to returning to academia and private practice.
God bless you all.
Ken Echesa
