KAKAMEGA ON GLOBAL MAP AS GOVERNOR IS FETTED IN FRANCE.
KAKAMEGA Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa has once again placed Kakamega County on the global map after being honoured with the prestigious People’s Choice Governors’ Excellence Award at the Paris Marriott Charles de Gaulle in Paris, France.
The award, presented during the global ceremony on Tuesday evening, celebrated governors who have demonstrated integrity, innovation, and transformative leadership. Governor Barasa, who received the Excellence in Infrastructure Development Award, was recognised for his visionary approach to governance, particularly in expanding infrastructure, strengthening public services, and aligning county priorities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
His leadership was hailed for driving socio-economic transformation through excellence in governance, service delivery, and institutional reforms.
The awards committee singled out Governor Barasa’s impressive milestones, including the construction of 40 kilometres of tarmac roads, 25 bridges, the maintenance of 900 kilometres of all-weather roads, the ongoing 40,000-capacity Bukhungu International Stadium, and the 750-bed capacity Kakamega Level VI Hospital.
In his acceptance speech, Governor Barasa dedicated the award to the people of Kakamega, noting that “infrastructure is not just an enabler for socio-economic development, but rather, its driver.”
Other notable winners from Kenya included H.E. Jeremiah Lomurukai of Turkana County, who received the Social Welfare Award; H.E. Mohamed Adan Khalif of Mandera County, honoured for Excellence in Education Advancement; and H.E. Dr. Kimani Wamatangi of Kiambu County, recognised as a Digital Transformative Leader.
Also honoured at the event were distinguished African leaders, including H.E. Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, FNSE, Governor of Nasarawa State; H.E. Major General Hisham Ahmed; Abul Nasr, Governor of Assiut Governorate; H.E. Professor Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State, Nigeria; H.E. Lt-Gen. Ahmed Khaled Hassan Saeed, Governor of Alexandria Governorate, Egypt; Amr Mohamed Hanafy, Governor of the Red Sea; H.E. Rt. Hon. Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, Nigeria; and His Excellency Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State. Their recognition highlighted Africa’s growing commitment to visionary leadership, accountability, and sustainable development across diverse sectors.
The event also offered a platform for networking with global policymakers, diplomats, and development partners, with Governor Barasa paying a courtesy call earlier in the day to Kenya’s Deputy Head of Mission in Paris, Amb. Jane Khasoa Lusenaka. He was accompanied by the County Secretary and Head of Public Service, Dr. Lawrence Omuhaka, and the CECM for Finance and ICT, Mr. Benjamin Andama.
