MUMIAS RECEIVER: DEVKI WAS SEEKING POLITICAL SYMPATHY.
"I will support anybody who will end the suffering of our farmers by seeking to invest at Mumias Sugar away from the toxic politicians" KETRACO CEO Fernandes Barasa.
"2022 politics not withstanding, we will support all genuine efforts to find a suitable investor for MUMIAS Sugar thru the KCB- Appointed receiver manager Mr. RAO" Ekaya.
Story By Joel Eshikumo.
Appearing before the Senate Agriculture and Licestock committee, Mr RAO said the process of leasing MUMIAS Sugar had attracted upto 8 bidders.
He dismissed claims by the DEVKI steel boss Raval Narendra that he had pulled out of the process of selection.
"As the received of Mumias Sugar, I read in the press of the withdrawal but nothing official is on my desk" He said.
Senators led by Kakamega's Honourable Cleophas Malala had taken the receiver to task over the process that had been used to select an investor saying it was not transparent.
RAO on his part eventually confirmed that there was no one selected as an investor for the company and that Devki was whipping emotions using politicians to influence the process that was still in initial stage.
"We did not advertise but Iam happy for this opportunity to clear the air that Honourable Malala had been very helpful when we starteoperating the Mumias boiler and we hope to have a transparent process going forward because Mumias is a public company" He said.
Senators also sought to know where DEVKI Steel company had got the notion of intending to invest Ksh 5Bill8on into the company that is under receivership.
RAO was categorical that the process of shopping for an investor was going to be transparent and to involve all stakeholders.
Last week, DEVKI announced that he had pulled out of the negotiations to take over MUMIAS Sugar due to what he termed "lack of involvement of all stake holders".
Early this week local leaders with scanty information led bodaboda riders into demonstrations wildly claiming that Devki had been chased from the company.
Today senate committe gave the Mumias Sugar appointed Receiver manager two weeks to advertise and shop for an investor for the company and get back for a full report.
This now puts to rest misleading speculation by political leaders that DEVKI was the highest bidder and he was chased from investing in the company.
Speaking after the senate meeting, Kakamega Preasure group leaders led by the Chairman Boniface Manda and Secretary General Musa Ekaya said they were pleased on the senate move and would support the receiver to get an investor using the right procedure.
